As a blogger or even business person you need to promote yourself. Many people think it is embarrassing to promote themselves but if you want to make a living as a blogger or business person you must promote yourself. No one else is going to do it for you.There is, however, a way to do it. By helping others and giving of your time and/or knowledge to others who are learning you will ultimately promote yourself. On my blogs I give away my knowledge freely and I have gained readers, loyal subscribers, people who will do anything (within reason) for me, and many who will go out of their way to help me or tell others about me and my blogs. By giving what you possess first you will get back ten-fold what you gave to begin with. It happens everytime.

Every week I read at least 20 blogs that have the word "Shameless Self Promotion" in them when the writers mention themselves or products. I never understand why so many people say this. I get blog posts daily related to self promotion and the majority of them are start with the words "a bit of Shameless Self Promotion".
You might think that the title "Shameless Self Promotion" appears once in a while here and there on a blog or a website. The majority of blogs or internet posts use the word "Shameless", WOW. When I saw this I decided to write a blog, then articles and finally a self help book.
Are you afraid of promoting yourself ? Do you think people will resent you or block you in some mental or unconscious way? What's going on? For starters, most of these internet entries come from people that have great content on their websites and blogs, so promote it, otherwise people will never find out and benefit from that content.
Maybe I can change your mind on what Self Promotion is and why it is never shameless. You see, self promotion is an impulse that started with survival, with a primal instinct of self preservation. Soon after it turned into a social skill that also required helping others to survive and strive in society in order to have more people helping each other and, yes, helping you.Self preservation started it all and now we have self promotion.
Now, you also have to remember that if you have a good product or a good service and people will benefit from it there is no shame in promoting it. After all, you are providing a solution. This is the most important point of this article. –If you provide value you need to promote it- This value can be with a product or service and it can also be form your advice, expertise, stories or blog posts. It is what I call "Unselfish Self Promotion".
Unselfish Self Promotion means that you provide value first. You provide value to family, friends, stranger and even customers or prospects.You give value in yourself and the way you interact with others. When you do this you are promoting yourself whether you want it or not.

What a nice thoughts! In my opinion the first responsibility of every person is the self promotion. As without self promotion he will not able to boom & grow. Distributing & sharing your knowledge with others can helps you in building new contacts & if you are a blogger it is the primary task for you.

There are ways to promote yourself without feeling ashamed. Write a post on your blog about all that you'd like to advertise about yourself or your product, then (the most popular technique at the moment) use a social networking site like facebook, myspace or Twitter to link to your page. It's fairly discreet, but it gets the job done!

I think that there's a line that you have to be careful that you don't cross when you're promoting yourself and your business. I agree with many of the other comments though, there is a time place and appropriate way to do it so that you don't lose credibility.

Great points about self promotion but also sometimes it's a cultural thing, too. As someone who is Asian American we come from centuries-old tradition of self-effacement and modesty, of not talking about oneself for vanity sake. I think these are demonstrated in action and not words. I think it also pervades the business culture of the Orient and how one conducts business in this atmosphere.

Hopefully you did not go with Publish America. I did and my book was published in October. Although the book looks good and it is doing very, very well in bookstores it has been a long road.
For me there's no such thing as "selfish self promotion". People pick up on that attitude and it's no longer "self promotion" it's more of "let everyone know I'm a selfish jerk" campaign. And that's not really good for anyone.

Well, self promotion is necessary (that is out of discussion). If You want to succeed in any branch You need to promote Yourself in best ways possible. If that mean that You need to harm someone it's up to You and Your conscience. Many people doesn't care about anything but themselves.
